Front driveline angle
« on: Mar 08, 2010, 06:48:56 AM »
Hello everyone. I just did a SAS on my 93' 4runner(5" springs). I was thinking my front driveline angle was to steep.
I was wondering is it possible to rotate the front axle to line up the angle like the rear? Or is a hi-pinion the only way to get the angle dialed in? Maybe someone could post a couple pics of their front D-Line angles to give me a reference. I'll try to get a couple pics of mine up a little later.

thanx in advance,
Chad

It seems to me that there essentially 4 ways to change the angle on the front driveshaft.  At least around here anyways.

1) High-pinion as you have already mentioned.

2) Change the position of the front axle by moving forward (or backward, but I can't imagine why someone would move it back).

3) Install a crawl box, although, drive line angle is not really the main feature of a crawl box, but it does change the drive line angle for what I believe to be the better.

and

4) Rotate the axle housing.  Unfortunately, rotating the front axle housing is much more complicated than doing so in the rear.  The main reason is b/c rotating the front axle greatly affects the steering.  If I understand correctly, others have done this, but it requires cutting off the knuckle balls on each end of the housing, and rotating them to the angle you want, and welding them back on.

If I am incorrect  :dunno:, someone, please say otherwise, but these are the only way I know to change the drive shaft/pinion angle.

Would shims work in front? I used 6 degrees on my rear axle and it seems fine so far...  :crossed:

I guess you could use shims, but you still have the same problem of rotating the steering system.  When the steering system rotates forward (or backward) the WHOLE steering system moves with it, including the linkages between the knuckles.  This means the linkages will get pushed down.  In the case of a high steer system, that will push the linkage into your springs if you have leaf springs, or in the case of the stock push-pull setup, it moves linkage closer to the ground giving even more opportunity for damage.  But even beyond all this, it will greatly affect your caster angle, unless as I said earlier, you cut off the knuckle ball, rotate it, and weld it back on.  And, you had better be a really good welder or have a really good welder do it for you.
