Coil/Ignitor compatibility?
« on: Mar 14, 2010, 04:22:25 PM »
I have a bad ignitor in my 1980 4x4.  I have an '81 parts truck with a different style coil and ignitor.  The pick up plug to the distributor is the same and the three wires to/from the coil are the same colors, tan, yellow and black (which I assume are supply, ground and tach?), only the connectors are different.

If I swap connectors will the '81 coil/ignitor work on my '80?

I wish I can help you. I had the same problems years back. I went from the 1980 nice skinny silver igniter to one out of a 8? Celica (free) I think it was. Big Black igniter everything looked the same as far as the connections go. I took a chance and Im still running that igniter today. I still use the stock can type coil.

searched my whole photo gallery and came up with this partial on the right side.

Found a better one. I Installed my Brake proportional valve. Igniter and coil to the right.

After checking the pickup coild air gap, testing everything else with an ohm meter and determining that nothing else could be suspect I went ahead and swapped the plugs on the '81 coil/ignitor over to the plugs from the '80 and it works like a charm.  The truck idles better than it ever did before so I think the old ignitor has been giving me problems all along.
