can't remove 2 of 8 cone washers
« on: Feb 27, 2010, 03:22:56 PM »
Hey guys, rebuilding my front axle with 5.29s and an ARB locker. Passenger side is done however i have 2 cone washers on the top trunion bearing/ j-arm that i can't remove. Used the technique that i used on the other 6 and nothing. Soaked for 4 days in PB Blaster, no luck. lots of hammering and even trying to get the jack in there to pry things apart, no again. Took a propane torch and you guessed it nothing. I don't agree with what i did next but i was desperate as i no warping could occur, i heated it up and threw water on it several times. Nothing. I also broke a screwdriver trying to pry it off the knuckle. Do you guys have any suggestions, im willing to try pretty much anything at this point. Thanks

Try a air chisel with a flat hammer. Or use a brass hammer and keep hitting it. Leave the nut on the top part of the stud so the cone washer wont go flying anywhere.

Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Try hitting the hub next to the washer with a brass drift and hammer, or hit the stud directly with the same.  You might want a nut on the end to protect the threads

Hit upward on the J-arm. Try to get a small screwdriver into the slot on the cone washer. Or.  Before you get crazy and break something, cut a nut in half, double nut the stud and back out the stud. At that point it should pop out.
Precision guess work done here.

ive been hitting the piss out of it. Also putting a screwdriver between the knuckle and j-arm and managed to break off the tip after repeated beatings. Im going to try the jam nut idea and get the stud out. thanks

Spent $3K on gears, lockers, axles, and rebuild kits so i have to wait for high steer, but yes that is my next move.

Did you soak it with PB Blaster, or any type of penetrating oil?

The double nut idea to get the stud out is a good idea. If the nut doesn't hold because it's still too tight and you don't care about saving the stud at this point, weld the nut on.

Once it cools use an impact wrench to unscrew the stud. Impacts seem to work better than just a ratchet, especially if you kind of feather the trigger a little to keep from twisting it off at the weld.

In the future put a little grease on the cone washer, they usally will launch when you go to remove them the next with a few taps of the hammer.

i got one of the cone washers off. Lots of heat yesterday and than some water to quickly cool it off. Than today when i took a chisel to it, it loosened up really easily. Still have one more to get off. Definately will put some grease under them this time, thanks for the tip napolian

I have always had success by threading the nut back on the top of the stud and beating the crap out of it, straight down, with a brass dead blow hammer.  Also, once it breaks loose a little bit I take a pair of needle nose pliers and use them to get the cone washer out.

the best thing to do first(way to late) when your taking em out is get a really small cold chizel and tap it into the slot in the cone washer. it will spread it making it loose on the stud and should raise out of the seat a little. its worked for every cone washer i've takin off. at this rate though just get some vise grips and pull the stud out, its ruined anyway
