Newbie Question Regarding Smog
« on: Feb 22, 2010, 07:22:22 PM »
I have a 1981 Toyota that has failed the CA smog test twice. :hammerhead: I had some work done to it (tuning, catalytic converter) and now I will take it back soon to have it tested again. My question is this: I am in the process of switching from 33" to 35" tires for a wheeling trip this weekend. If I try to smog the truck with the 35" tires instead of the 33" will the truck be less likely to pass smog due to the engine working harder to move the 35s instead of the 33s? I know its a strange question but I have a guy that wants to buy the 33s and I am hesitant to sell them until I pass smog. Will it really make a difference?

Thanks

What's it failing for?  NOx for instance is different than CO2 when it comes to problem shooting.

One thing, though, is to do an oil and air filter change beforehand and then run in a good 20 minutes on the highway in 4th gear to get the cat and exhaust nice and hot.  IIRc you can akllso advance/play around with the timing 1-2 degrees and still pass.
