my first toyota project
« on: Jan 10, 2009, 08:29:05 PM »
so ive seen quiet a few build threads so i decided to start my own.... this is the first toyota ive owned. bought it for 1500 a couple months back. it hasnt been registerd on the road since 83! the odo sais 26K but from the condition, it looks like 126 so im not sure on that. when i got it, the person before messed the intake all up trying to rig up EFI from a ford escort  ??? ive done a little work since ive gotten it. i had to buy a new intake manifold, fuel tank, carb and some other misc stuff. to get it going....after figuring some stuff out i got her on the road and eventually on the trails. then about 2 hours in, the clutch went out. so i was looking around for a new clutch and word on the street lead me to marlin. so when i get a few bucks im investing in the hd clutch and the flywheel. and looking for a 5 speed to put in. then my next plans are dual exhaust then with my tax income, i wanna get propane injection. let me know what ya guys have for ideas or input or anything! heres a few more pics of what it looks like now, im still in the process of painting it black though.   in the last pic, thats where the clutch burnt up. a jeep with a winch and a few hours later, got it back out of there.

why are you wanting to put dual exhaust on?

I like it alot! what tire/size are your running and what kind of tires? how about keep some of the orange on there? i like both colors, as far as dual exhaust go for it, but keep both pipes 1'' or 1.5 otherwise if go too much it will hurt back pressure on the engine
where are u located?

Interesting and unique truck.  Mine says something like 12,000 miles, but it's rolled over 5 times so it's 512,000 miles.

SUper! but all the cool kids are runnin at least 5 or 6 inch tips on them......I think they are calling them "fart cans"...

Seems to be a popular mod and the girls love the look and roar of 4 cylinder at the big dual tips

Personally I dont think duals are a good idea....more exhaust to get ripped off on the trail and ZERO power gains....probably a loss actually

haha, im  not puttin any 5 inch can on there...im thinking im going with a flowmaster that has the 2 outlets then keep the pipe about 1.5-2" with like a polished 2" tip. i was either thinking dual or maybe putting a stack on it....but i think doing a stack would be more expensive depending on the stack its self and where i got it.

Doing exhaust isn't too tricky if you have some fab skills. Get a cheapo pipe bender at Harbor Freight (about $100) an get some exhaust tube and start bending it up. You can get a flange tool or can weld it depending on your skill levels. If your serious about running duals, go with the smaller 1.5", as you'll need that back pressure. If you run single, you can go up to 2.25".
* Regardless of what happens, someone will find a way to take it too seriously.
* 2% rule: Must be 2% smarter than what your working on.
* If you make something even a fool can use, only a fool will use it.

well i already know i dont need one. i just realized there wasnt one in there and there was no splice in the pipe where there should be one.....so im assuming someone already put bigger pipe in it....do you guys recomend putting a cherry bomb in, or no? i was thinking about it but i wasnt sure.

so I'm bring'n this back up! I'm sure some of you remember i couldn't get my tranny out, well my pilot bearing was welded to the shaft. i finally got it separated enough (using a come along) and i got the pressure plate bolts out. the clutch disc literally looked like shredded cheese! i wish i took a pic but i didn't. i realized it was a little hard to save up and get the clutch and everything i wanted since the girl Friend got laid off. but a buddy hooked me up and gave me his complete 5spd and clutch for free!! i just had to promise id go wheelin with him

i put it in yesterday and it runs awesome. except now i need a radiator and need to fix the idling problem.
also in the meen time, since my truck has been down, i installed a long bed fuel tank in the bed of the truck, and wired in a (hidden) switch to it and also put in another switch into another wire (i forget the dang name right now) so my truck doesn't get any spark.I'm just trying to put a few anti-theft devices on it, rather than buying an alarm. plus its cheaper!

if it ever stops rainin today I'm going to run a breather hose from my axles up into the cab

i also put on a flowmaster....holy  :pokinit: is it loud? my exhaust is just straight through and comes out the flowmaster behind the cab. ill continue a pipe out of the muffler to the end of the truck, later when i get some money, but will that quiet it down all that much? or would putting a resonator in help? i like to be able to hear it, but it even hurts my ears just idling if i put my head by my rear tire

so its been a while since i last posted here, i figured id post up some current pics and how my truck is doin.
since the last post, ive added on a air compressor, air tank, gas filler, horns, hi lift, exhaust, power steering, and 529s

heres a little cluster of switchs i put together, 1 is to my distrubtor (anit theft), 1 is my dome light, 1 is my air compressor, 1 is my horns and 1 is tapd into my reverse lights so i can turn them on if needed

heres my exhaust i did....i had a flowmaster on it but i hated how loud it was. i found that i liked it best with just the cherry bomb on it....i got 1.5 pipe coming all the way back leading into the cherry
you can also see my quick disconenect mud flaps. i just mounted my mud flaps to 1" solid square stock and it slides into a 1" ID square stock with a pin holding it in.

i put my fuel tank in the bed since i had the bigger tank on hand and it wouldnt go underneath. so i made a little filler out of my roll bar with some 1/8" plate and weld'd it in

heres just a pic of my back end. you can kind of see my air tank (30 gallon) and my fuel tank. i also mounted up my hi lift on the side by my fuel filler

heres my front end right now, im waiting for my gears to be put together so i can put them in and have 4wd again! i dont have the tools and place to do it my self and theres a local guy that installs them for $75 and that seemd like a fair price to me

if all goes as planned, i should have my gears in a couple hours and ill be out in the trails and if it isnt dark, ill take some pics. next things i need to do is put in a stereo and speakers. i also want to put on some lift shackles and/or wheel spacers. my front tires rub when theyre pushd up in my fender.

what do you guys think?  :beerchug:

thanks, but yea i was just trying to think of some way instead of some alarm. i just spliced a wire and ran it to the switch....took maybe 10 minutes. i also got my fuel pump that has a switch on it thats hidden.
