crane d44 high steer hubs on 85 toy axle
« on: Nov 19, 2004, 05:06:34 AM »
hi i was thinking abought taking the new CRANE, kingpin high steer knuckles , and inner c's and weld them on the axle tube of an 85 toy to make basicaly the same thing all pro off road did with there hybrid axle, but i dont want the ball joint style knuckles.
I have questions on how to set camber when i reweld on the new c's?
what size is the stock axle tube of an 85 toy?(so i can have the inner c's bored out.)
and who will do the work of taking a new d44 35 spline axle shaft, and cut it down and respline the differntial side to toy splines.?

i will be installing this on a 2002 tacoma 4 door, with crawler box, and use 4 link suspention, and coil over shocks on all 4 .
the nuckles will use ford disk brakes, and spindles ,and d44 bearings (stock) lug patern will be 6 on 5.5 ,16" wheels,(same as toy) and warn manual locking hubs 35 spline.i figure the bigger bearings of the d44 will help suport the large 37" tires.
the diff will be a fj80 high pinion electric locker, or if i can take the factory rear electric locker out and put in the front solid axle, then i can put in a detroit locker in the front IFS housing , and stick the IFS housing in the  rear axle, better for the driveline park brake.(ie being that an electirc locker not ingaged only one wheel holds in park brake mode, a mechanical locker is ingaged all the time and both weels hold all the time in park brake mode.)
(are these diffs interchangable?)(if not ill stick with the fj80)

i ran accross a post abought a week rear axle on a newer toy. and i was thinking abought just swaping out both axles to dana 60 rockcrushers the price was $11k!  way to much i think,
so im looking into this idea.  please leave any comments or ideas here please.
are there any landcruser axles that are a good candidate for the front?
