« on: Jul 01, 2010, 06:06:22 PM »
Anyone got a good 12V air compressor that's worth its money for under $60.00 ? Let's hear all the good bad and the ugly on this topic.

The Superflow MV50 works about the best, you can usually find them for around $50, or used to anyways.  If you use a tank they will do 4 35's from 3psi to 35psi in about 45 minutes.  A tank pre-filled will reduce the time some, maybe down to about 30-35 minutes.

This one? http://www.amazon.com/Industries-MV50-SuperFlow-Hi-Compressor/dp/B000BM8RT8 . I was at autozone and happen to run by this  http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/accessories/accProductDetails.jsp?itemIdentifier=837628_0_0_&skuDescription=Slime+/+150PSI12Voltsheavydutytireinflator&brandName=Slime&displayName=150PSI12Voltsheavydutytireinflator&skuDisplayName=Slime&categoryNValue=10199999&navValue=101618&categoryDisplayName=150PSI12Voltsheavydutytireinflator&parentId=01-10&itemId=1618-10&productId=837628 .  It seems ok for the money.

small 12v compressors are not gonna do much on any tires over 28" tall. your best bet would be a viair compressor and a 5gallon tank but it'd still take a while. Or just run a oba.

Yes that is the one.  A few of my buddies and I have been running them for about 6yrs now(maybe longer).  I just burnt up the first one I bought, it cuts out after a tire, I will likely use if for the ARB in my '90.  They get very hot, so you either have to let them cool off before packing, or mount them some place where they are protected from gear.  In my '91 they are in one of the side storage bins, and in my '90 I fab'd up a small cage for it, as well as the one for a Buddy's 4-Runner to run his ARB's off of.  I can't recall how many amps they draw, but enough that you wouldn't want to run two at the same time w/the stock alternator.  I have never timed how long it takes them to fill up my tires, the 40 minutes is just a guess, but it is quite a bit longer than the CO2 I used to run.

I can't comment on the one at Autozone, it could be the same thing just repackaged, likely made in China just like the MV50.  I would rather buy something American made, but none of the Viair's I have seen on the trail work any better for duration or speed of fill-up, and they cost several $100 more.

The best bang for your buck is to run a York compressor, I have seen them set-up to where you keep the A/C.

I'll keep the autozone one for now but, do you have any links to the york set up? That sounds interesting. Especially since I wont trade my COLD A/C for an air pump. thanks

Here is picture link for ErikB's York Comp. in his '86 Runner.  He made brackets for a few members on another board a few years ago,I am  not sure if he still makes them.  He is a member here, you should send him a PM and see if he still makes the brackets.
