22R-E question?
« on: Jun 17, 2009, 10:02:56 AM »
As some of you may know I'm new to Toyotas and I have a couple of questions. I purchased a 1985 4runner from a man who thought he was a mechanic and tried to fix the truck, to make a long story short the truck ended up worse than it was. Well I have worked my way around the truck and got to the point where I realized the computer was bad, after opening the computer up I realized that it was the root of my problems. The 4runner has a 22R-E engine with the EFI system, the computer that is on the truck is marked as a 22R, that was a concern to me as I dont think this is the computer that belongs in the truck. I read some where that there is two types of computers a 22r a 22r-s that is a california emissions friendly version and that one of them has two plugs and the other has three. Mine is marked 22r and it has 3 plugs, I belive that this is a california truck and I dont think the computer belongs here, am I correct or am I way off?

Thank you in advanced for any help you may provide and excuse my noobness.

~Marcos~

IF YOU HAVE AN EXTRA plug then you have the wrong ecu, but chances are you have the right one.
if you are having drivability problems check out the throttle position sensor,it is most likely to fail then ohm out all the rest of the sensors starting with the auxiliry air valve.  very easy to do just get the specs from the field srvice manual.
lastly if all checks out and you are sure you dont have a vacume leak, the plugs and wires are good and the fuel pump is good id look at the harness , mainly all the ends and connectors for cuts or breaks. good luck it is a needle in a haystack sometimes
