Engine shuts off while braking
« on: Oct 16, 2004, 11:44:41 PM »
86' 4runner EFI 22re, recently i've noticed that when i put the a/c on the engine begins to tremble hardcore, shut the a/c off the engine stops the shakes. Today when i would come to a stop the runner shut off on me, this happened 3 times. She starts again but when ever i come to a stop and i have the a/c on she turns off. When the a/c is off she works fine. Has this ever happened to anyone our there?? Oh i got a bad O2 sensor and a bad TPS would this have anything to deal with it?

1) Well you know that the computer waits until the speedsensor stops giving a signal, and then once you come to a stop, the ecu runs full idle. So, if your idle is set too low, then when you come to a stop, the ecu will want to idle down and then it could just die out.

2) Also, you could have a bad battery, and when you put the brake lights on at an idle, the alternator has to run most of the power, and it puts a load on the engine and kills it. This happened in my MR2, It would *almost * die when I hit the brakes after driving on the freeway for a while. Then when I would coast to the stop light and hit the brakes while in neutral, the rpm would drop to about 500-600 and almost die, and a couple of times it did die.
I couldn't figure it out, and then one time I built a new battery mount in the front trunk and replaced the battery, then the whole problem went away.

Good Luck

Ok, i adjusted the idle and now the engine runs very smooth. Funny thing happened today when i was leave the University, my AT oil temp light, brake light and battery liught all turned on. Thing is that i have a funny power steering pump, leeks every now and again, i got ps oil in the alternator! :pokinit:, so here i am looking for the problem in the ps and found out that is the o-ring that goes on to the port that connects to the return hose. While removing this i managed, in all my stupid hand glory to break the air vacum hoses that go from the EFI to the ps. Great its one bad thing after another. Does any one know where i can buy a complete vacum air hose kit for an 86 toy4runner with the 2.4?

The 86 doesnt have a IAC. It uses a VSS to kick the idle up when the A/C is on.

On the valve cover are two VSS's the rear one Near the fire wall) is for the fuel pressure regulator and the front one is the A/C Idle up. Trace the lines and one of them comes into a funky deal with 3-4 hoses on it and a plast screw sticking up. That screw is what sets the idle for the A/C.

So now go set your base idle back to 750-800 with A/C off, in gear since its a Auto. Set the A/C idle with the screw.

I adjusted the VVS control knob, replaced the alternator, repl;aced the o-ring in the ps that caused the problem. Everything seems to be working fine, will keep an eye on that ps for the next few days. Thanks for all the help guys will post later on :crossed:
