1980 Chevota Build
« on: Apr 23, 2009, 10:45:55 AM »
Here we go. finally going to try and build something. Got this 1980 toy p/u from my cousin for $50 :gap: I dont know if the motor is good and a shock tower is broken. When i lived in concord I picked up a Chevy 350 and an 700r4 trans. for $125. I got the motor and tranny pull last night and today hopefully I'm going to pull some 1/2 ton chevy axles at the wrecking yard. Next step is deciding on spings. I've never done a build before so everything wil be trial and error. any advice is appreciated. Here's some pics of what i have so far.

New toy that cost as much as the truck and motor together.

yea, theres some fairly nice lakes up there. a lot of the roads up there that used to require 4x4 you can now hit in 2wd at 30. so now its all about knowing where to go up there. so im still tryin to figure out where everything is at...

i went to get some 1/2 ton axles today at the wrecking yard and they wanted $500 for front and back out of a truck they were just going to crush  :yikes:. but i will find a deal soon. i got a new alternater for my DD and then fond out i needed a battery also. after all of that i only got to cut off one shock tower before it got dark. now it is time to relax :drunk:

The toy axle is stronger than the 1/2 ton chevy axle. I am running 37's on mine with a 4.3L v6.

I also would suggest you rethink you're axle choices. The 1/2 ton Chevy rear (10 bolt) is complete junk. If you want to go full width Chevy use a 14 bolt rear. They are heavy and hang down but they are bullet proof in stock form and you will never need to upgrade. If you use a Chevy 10 bolt front with 8 lugs it will be easy to upgrade to a front 60 down the road. The 10 bolt (basically a Dana 44) is OK in stock form but don't put any money into upgrading it. It will still be weaker than a stock 60 no matter how much money you put into it.

If you look around you should be able to pick up a 14 bolt with 4.10 gears for 100-200$. A front 10 bolt should be about 200$. Keep an eye on craigs list and be patiant and you will find a good deal as these are very common axles. Stay away from the factory chevy lockers as they are said to be very weak and you won't be able to use the carrier for a detroit or lock right.

i didn't read the last couple posts until now but i got some axles out of 1/2 ton. front 10 bolt and rear 12. got the drivelines and the i think SM465 trans and NP205 case. but i might have some 3/4 tons lined up for this weekend that i could trade my toy axles for. if so i will sell the 1/2 tons for what i payed for the whole deal ($300) and get a free trans, case and drivelines out of the deal   i want to run about 40" tires so i hope i can be easy on the throttle. I'm going with Chevy axles for the width and the cool factor. 1/2 tons because of the price.

I run a 350 turbo 400 and toy axles bobby long cromoloy 30 splines, birfs and hub gears up front stock in rear.  5.29 gears welded front and rear.  36" Iroks.  Someday might move up to one tons however I would not bother with 1/2 ton axles if I was you.  Save your money and go one tons.  Just my two  :twocents:

Be a little careful buying 3/4 ton axles. GM made a semi float 14 bolt that came in many 3/4 ton suburbans and who knows what else. It has a smaller ring gear, no third pinion bearing, and c-clip axles and is weaker than the full float version.

The axle you want should look like this.

Removable pinion support on the front.

The semi float version has a more rounded rear cover.

The full float hubs should look like this.(This is a full float Dana 60 but you get the idea.)

I am not a Chevy guy so I'm not sure what came in what. Maybe someone else can chime in with better info.

thanks. i really appreciate the info. ill check those out and let you know what they are tomarrow. i would definitely keep the toy axles to sas my 4runner but as you can see in the pics i live in a double wide with barley any property so i cant keep stuff layin around. Also i just went down the street to a yard sale and picked up (4) 33/13.5/15R Super Swampers for $40. one is on a wheel and almost band new and the worst one is better than 80%. a little rash but great rollers until i can afford some 4Ds.
