dash lights
« on: May 12, 2009, 10:06:03 PM »
I recently did a manual transmission swap in my 1986 4runner and now when i turn the truck on all the dashlights stay on except for the check engine light. The AT oil temp, brake and battery light all stay on when the vehicle is running. I have no idea why this is happening and i dont know if it has anything to do with the auto to manual swap i just did. I am assuming it is because it didnt do it before the work. Hopefully someone can help me here.  Thanks

Not exactly sure how the process works, but I believe the ECU is getting a error code which is causeing the lights to appear. Not sure on the 86 how many or what type of sensors there are, but may be that doing the swap removed or changed the parameters, which is throwing codes. On my 85, when the brake and battery lights came on, it meant that the alt had fried (bad external regulator), and I'm not really sure if changing the tranny would affect this. Not alot of solid info, I know, but at least it gives you a place to start looking.

thanks for the info. You said it had a bad external regulator is that something that is part of the alternator. About two days after i did the swap the lights would come on when i would step on the gas only. Now after the truck sat for about 2 weeks doing some work to it the lights just stay on all the time.

Alternator definitely went bad if thats the case. Take out the A/T Oil light since you dont have an auto tranny and take out the alternator and get it tested.

Will do. Any idea what causes this? Is it possible that a bunch of leaking power steering fluid that has accumulated on my alternator could ruin it?  Thanks for the help.
