Topic: ring in long side of straight axle?

hi all Ive got an 84 4runner i took the axle shafts out to get ready for 30 spline longs but my other birfs were destroyed. on the long side after i pulled the inner axle out i found a ring inside the axle housing. was wondering if this was to carry the end of the long shaft or where it might have come from. any info will be greatly appreciated

It is a baffle that is/was in the axle tube. It does two things, keeps the gear lube from sloshing to quickly towards the end of the tubes and possibly starving the diff of lube. It also helps to align the axle going into the third when installing the axle. Do you need them, some say yes, some say no. I do not run them, but my truck is a trail rig only.
