Yukon spool install
« on: Feb 08, 2009, 11:36:47 AM »
I'm looking for a install walkthrough of a spool, been searching found many but all vauge "Now I set backlash to .015" but no picks or details. I am reusing my same gears just putting in the spool. So far I get you mark all your caps, bearings, reuse carrier bearings press onto spool  and then set backlash.
I have a 20 ton press and dial indicater.

Are you using the same adjusters on the side of bearing caps that were there when the stock carrier was in place to adjust backlash?

Any step instructions would be great I've been searching since yesterday for the info.

"Now I set backlash to .015" ....

Any step instructions would be great I've been searching since yesterday for the info.

Only set the backlash to .015" (that's a bit loose, usually .008-.012" is spec for new) if that's where it was before disassembly.  Hopefully you checked that already since you want it where it was before you started or at least as close as possible to what it was.

And yes! you use the adjusting rings to adjust the backlash by moving them to move the carrier to either side (ring gear closer or further away from pinion) and checking the backlash after each adjustment. The adjustment rings are also used to set the side bearing preload.

Other than that, it's pretty straight forward.
