Liberty after Turkey Day run!
« on: Nov 05, 2009, 09:21:46 AM »
It's kinda an annual tradition for me to run something out in Penrose the day after Thanksgiving while the others are out battling for the best shopping deals

The run will be Nov. 27th.  We'll run Liberty which is the easier of the 2 trails out there.  I'd suggest 35's, locked F&R, and some armor.  Let me know if you can make it!

Any more info like meeting times, etc? What's going to be run (trails) ? Who's got the Cheez-Its?

So far, it's myself, COToy91, and Mythica (from the COTTORA board) with wakkjobb riding.  What time COToy91?  You've got the longest drive between the 4 of us.  Maybe a 10am start?

I was thinking of being on the ground 99% of the time, my girl wants to see the fun too... I'm getting her hooked on Toyotas/wheeling now. I was thinking of meeting you guys there and walking the trail while everyone wheels since it's less than a mile long... or is that not such a good idea? I've never been there but have seen a few videos from traildamage and rockfrogs.

Liberty is the easier of the runs in Penrose and it's probably 2 miles each way (we will run it out & back).  It's walkable but it will be a long day.  The worst part about walking that far is the trail is basically bowling ball sized rocks the entire way so it's hard to walk on.  Patriot is the trail that's about a mile long and can be walked.  It's also tough to walk (big ledges, big rocks).

10 would work for me, means i only have to wake up at eight. I have to check with my family on all this, but I should be able to go. I would be coming down 115 though into Penrose. Is there a good place to meet like a gas station so i can fuel up after that drive?

It's a 45min to 1 hr drive from Co Springs to the turnoff for the trailhead.  Yes, there is a gas station on hwy 115 that you can fuel up after the run.

Take Highway 115 32 miles until just before you get to the town of Penrose. Turn right on 3rd Street off of 115 following signs to Brush Hollow Reservoir. Turn right on E Street (County Road 127) and continue until you have crossed over two cattle guards and you are in the trees.  We can meet in the big parking lots by the trail signs and then head back to the Liberty trailhead.

It should take 3-4 hours taking our time and getting some pictures.  I might have some seat available.

Awesome; like I said we're not opposed to walking for a while. Stopped off there Friday and walked around the exit/handrail part... some of those rocks are 5 feet tall; should make for some great pictures!

That's the exit for Patriot, the tough trail.  We'll be doing the easier trail which is north of the Patriot exit.  I've done Patriot once, broke my hydro assist steering setup on the exit and had to winch out.

Yeah.  Take 127 over the 2 cattle guards, you will pass through a gated fence.  That is the start of the BLM land.  Drive up that dirt road and look for the big metal sign on your left.  It show where the start of Patriot is located and give you a list of recommend mods to have before dropping in.  There's parking closer to the start of Patriot.  That's where we'll meet.

Here's your sign...

I think we'll just wait at the BLM entrance by the bathroom shack for you guys since I have no idea where stuff is. It all looks like a potential 'parking area' to me...

Perfect, that's the sign.  Head to the sign and then follow the dirt road to the left.  Tons of parking.

To bad I'm not closer to you guys cause we'd bring 4 rigs.  I think we might be headed to Moab though, only 90 miles away.  I probally got 3 rigs comin to the toyota deal next year.  So, keep the info comin.

Honestly, if I had my pick between Indy & Moab, it's Moab everytime :)  I'd totally suggest running Indy but I'm guessing your in GJ.  You'll have to make a weekend trip out of it (along with a BV Carnage run) to get your money's worth.  I will keep you posted on the Colorado 4Runner Jamboree!  Toytank and boggerrunner came out from GJ last year!

It's not looking good that I will be able to make this trip.  Asked the wife yesterday and she wasn't thrilled.  I guess we've got some kind of family thing planned for noon on Friday.  Mythicia from the TTORA board is still planning on going along with his uncle so there will be rigs running it.  Sorry about that CoToy91  :slap:  I can draw up something to show you the entrance to Liberty.  It's not hard to find.

Click on this link and it will take you to Google Maps.  Make sure you zoom almost all the way in, have the satellite button in the top right clicked on.  This is very close to the trailhead for Liberty.  If you see, Co Rd 127 runs back there.  You can also see several cars parked back at the Y in the road.  That's close to the trailhead for Patriot.  Just take the main road back past all of that and take your first right.  You will see a big firepit.  That's the entrance to Liberty.

If you PM me your email address, I can email you a trail map I just drew up.  I'm not at home or I'd just FTP it to my server and host it that way but I can't FTP from work.

Crap... I remembered I have court Friday at 10am. Sounds like we'll have to do something later.    Hopefully I'll have the Runner in my possession by then; whenever that may be. Is Eagle Rock/Saran Wrap too far for anyone? Could do some snow wheeling the next few months (if it ever snows).

No worries.  I'll let Mythica know on COTTORA.  He's still planning on going.  Get that cage and HA installed, you'll be ready to run BV Carnage at the CO4RJ next year :)
