carb backfire
« on: Dec 06, 2008, 01:17:35 PM »
so i just got my 22r back into my 85 pickup, replaced the timing chain sprockets metal guides..., cleaned up everything, did the head gasket and every other gasket aswell. new cap rotor plugs and wires, ditched charcoal canister and some vacuum lines and seealed it all up. but it will NOT START! it will backfire out the carb and gets worse when i give it more gas. the crank and cam ar lined up im sure. its getting spark i can smell gas? i dont know if its my carb has gone to :pokinit: while sitting(didnt rebuild it :/) or if im just f'n up the timing at the distributor or im messed up the vacuum somehow, i know its not leaking though all new lines and stuff. any help would be greatly appriaciated it ran when i took it out and i want to hear her purr again. thanks!

If you are sure about your cam timing, check your distributor timing.  It can only backfire out of the carb if it gets fire when a valve is open.

Back firing through the carb is a timing issue. Sounds like you have the cam right, check the distributor is in right, it could be off a couple of the or you have it 180 out.

yeah when backfires though the carb in my experiences it is firing to quick ,  the plug sparks while the fuel still up in top of motor and not down in cylinder yet ?

not really. there is always an air/fuel mixture in the intake when the engine is running. the spark is at the wrong time, or at the right time with the valve opening at the wrong time, which allows the fuel to flash back through the intake and out of the carb. It's a timing issue.

I WOULD CHECK AND SEE IF YOU GOT YOUR PLUG WIRES CORRECT. INCORRECT FIRING ORDER WILL CAUSE CARB TO BACKFIRE
