Catalytic converter suggestion for 3rz swap.
« on: Jan 04, 2009, 06:06:07 PM »
Im trying to get my exhaust done on my 2002 3rz in my 87 pick up next weekend and am looking for suggestions on converters. Do i need a specific one for the 1st and another for the 2nd or can i use regular hi flow cats from jegs for both the 1st and the 2nd? I am going with 2.25 but dont want to make any mistakes when it comes to catalytic converters.

Thanks

For the first cat you need an obd2 compliant cat or the computers gonna set a cat efficiency code ( i used a cat off a acura 3.2tl ) for the second it shouldn't it's not monitored by the computer.

not sure about in arizona...how are your smog laws, and is there an O2 sensor in between or after the 2nd cat on the harness? If there is only 1, I wouldn't worry about it, just a highflow cat or whatever will pass your emissions test. if there are 2 or more, I'd run an aftermarket OBD2 cat.

edit: he beat me to the post. looks like there is an o2 after the first cat, so you need an OBD2 cat on it.

The 2002 3rz have 2 cats with what toyota calls a air/ fuel metering sensor after the first and a regular o2 sensor after the 2nd. I dont know what the difference is but there was quite a price difference at toyota between the 2.

yes OBD2 cats are quite a bit more expensive but if you don't run one, it won't run right.
