2nd gen bed on 1st gen
« on: Oct 03, 2008, 08:13:56 PM »
has anyone put a 2nd gen bed on a first gen pick up ?
my bed on my 83 is crappy the previous owner did a terrible bob on it and its all rusty and I want to replace it but there are no 1st gens anywhere near me but alot of 2nd and 3rd gens. I also want the 2nd gen bed cuz they have a lot more options for toppers. so I was wonder what is required to mount a 2nd gen bed on my 1st gen ?

any pics please

Bolts are required.

I'm sure its been done, you may have to move some bed mounts, and the body lines may not line up properly, but a small body lift on the bed will fix that fairly easily.  Also, I believe the width of the 2nd gen bed is a few inches wider, so on either side of the truck, you may have a little sticking out.

I dont want to have to keep taknig the bed on and off I want to be able to just adjust everthing on the new bed and then throw it on

I think you'll be really lucky to find someone with step by step photos or exact measurements for you. You're better off finding a bed you want, and measuring everything and comparing that to your truck, then you'll know.

Just my .02cents but i think a 3rd gen bed would look better becuse it has more rounded body lines like a 1st gen . I think that the 3rd gen is wider though But you could cut it down the middle and narrow it up .

I am also thinking of just ordering bed sides for a 1st gen from the yota yard in denver depending on prices and just welding them to the floor of my original bed

I'd do that or just search out a clean first gen bed.  There is no cooler body on a toyota pickup than a first gen, and sticking any other bed on one is blasphemy

i have a first gen bed on my second gen truck if that matters......

for your application, the first  gen beds had a removeable front mount that went to the frame, the 2nd gen has a mount on the frame that goes to the bed, and rests on it there.....

they are a little different, when i did mine, i jsut left that mount off, it hasnt shown any adverse effects, also, my bed is bobbed, so i am also not running the rear most mounts, because they were removed, i have 4 of the 8 bolts holding my bed on, and i have loaded it down several times, with no ill effects, the body edges dont stick out further, the lines are off, but are pretty close, if putting the later bed on the earleir pickup though, you will need to drop the body of the pickup or raise the cab to get the lines to match

hope this helps

Strange, I thought I had more pics of first gens with flat beds  :dunno:  Anyway, one's a flat bed and the other is a tube bed - belongs to showwhoebrew or something like that?

I saw another first gen running around town today with a flatbed on it, stopped and snapped a couple pics and noticed it was mostly wood so I doubt you'd really want to see the pics.

My truck is an 83 solid axle frame with a 94 cab and bed on it.  All you have to do is sit the bed on the frame, then get it where you want it, and move or make new bed mounts...  Simple as that.
