30-40LE Tacoma Tranny...Anyone?
« on: Aug 17, 2004, 10:06:22 AM »
Heres my situation....I have a 98' 2wd Tacoma prerunner with  a 2.7 and auto tranny that I am converting to 4wd. Come to find out there appears to be only one model and many variations of that model tranny for the auto Tacoma's...30-40LE. I have a auto 4wd tranny from a V-6 and want to swap it in but the bell housing is slightly different on the 2.7. Can I just switch the bell housing out from my 2wd tranny and make it work????

Any help would be appreciated!

It should be a direct swap.  Marlin would know for sure of course, Im sure he'll be on in the next day or so.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

This is the first time that I have been asked this question.
I know that the bellhousings will interchange however you will need to use the matching V6 torque converter with the V6 trans.

If your auto is a 95 and older, the magnitic pickup in the trans will be wrong.
Your 98 uses a 4 prong pickup, whereas the 95 and older has a single spinning magnitic.
Only 96 and newer trans will interchange.

The tranny is a 99' and my truck is a 98'. So I will need to swap the bell housing and torque converter from my old tranny to the new one, or will I need to get a V-6 Torque converter??? I am trying to figure out if this will work before I start tinkering with it as this is my daily driver. Thanks for the response! :)

You'd need to reuse your 4 cyl converter.

Just a thought, are you using the ifs or are you doing a solid axle swap?

It's still a ways off...I need to get a crawler and new crossmember before I put it in.... then I have to finish building the axle. I'm hoping to have it done by March so I can go play at our annual AZ Rocks TTORA event.

hehehe......I only want to have to do this once or twice, not three or four times before I get it right!

I'm still confused....I think Marlin is saying I need to use the V-6 Torque Converter???

Nope, you need to use the converter that belongs to your engine.  The  4 cyl vs. 6 cyl converters have different stall speeds therefore different characteristics.
