Lower First Gear?
« on: Jun 01, 2005, 07:04:35 AM »
I was wondering if any company made a lower first gear for the toyota 5 speed, I have an 88 Runner and I Would like to get it lower, I don't want to put a different tranny in it, unless I find a NV4500.

Do you have a V-6? if so you could have Marlin put the trubo frist gear in it.

I think it 3.83 vs 4.21

Is that as low as you can get with the Toy tranny? I do have the V6.
Also can I buy that first gear, I do not live around there so that option is no good.

you'd have to get mikey or Marlin to find out if there's anything lower. :dunno:

4.21 might be low enough, is there any way I can buy this gear from somewhere?

Marlin also has a 1st gear out of a Hino truck that is 5.15:1 that goes into r series trannies.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

an NV4500 weighs in at about 200#, 1st gear is 5.61.  An R151/150 weighs in at about 100#, 1st gear from Marlin is 5.15.

While a NV4500 is good for a butt load of torque, do you really need it in a 4runner?  The R series trans are good for about 300 horse power, half the weight, and the overall cost is about 25% less.  Besides, it would be all Toyota!

I was thinking a sm465... I know where there is one, but then I would loose my highway driveability(is that a word?) since they are only a 4 speed with  bull low. I wa thinking maybe having bull low in a Toy tranny. I'm not sure if that is possible though.

I've got a 5 speed and haven't even touched 5th yet. Boggers and wind limit that.

r151 is actually 4.31...not a big diff, though...just go 4.88s and 31s...I love my 5th gear!!  :driving:   :rivers:

I'm gonna be running 5.29's and 36's... I have a 3.0 and I think I might be able to use 5th gear. 4.31 must make a bit of a difference...

it makes a 4.58 difference in your crawl ratio with 5.29's and a stock t-case.

I want to go low with my toyota, I want a low crawl ratio... I am thinking of maybe a dual t-case with a Dana 300 adapted at the back for twin stick if I can make the adapters.

the only reason you lose driveability with an SM420/SM465 is because of the huge gaps between gears(mainly 3rd and 4th).  it's frustrating even on my chevy work truck -- 3rd gear is too low and 4th is too high for a lot of things, but the 383 under the hood ususually makes up for that

i toyed with putting a close ratio T19 into my pickup a while back.  they have something like a 4.xx first gear so it'd play nicely with 4.56s and 33s or 4.88s and 35s on a toyota, plus first gear is synchronized and the tranny is nearly bulletproof.

If you can find one... are they a common truck, It is hard as hell to find Toyota parts around here... I can't even find a tailgate for my runner, I found one and the whole bottom was rusted out it, they wanted $150.

Marlin must has some gears sitting around the shop. I was just looking on his transmission rebuild page that he puts just over a 5 first gear from some kind of imported gear... anyone know what they are?
