Stock drive shafts with flat belly and no lift?
« on: Jul 21, 2008, 04:50:49 PM »
I was wondering if I can safely use stock drive shafts on my '84 4runner with no lift and a flat belly?  I had to pull the rear because of a bad u-joint and it seemed like it had plenty of spline left, but I am wondering about the joint angles.  Will the joints be fine or should I shim the rear axle?  I drove it about 6 inches in the garage on the front shaft and it worked, but that is far from real world.  The pinion seems to point up quite a bit, plus it has a double cardian (sp?) joint on the t-case side, but I have never pulled the shaft so I have no clue how long it actually is.  Oh, I only raised the rear end, didn't mess with the front engine mounts if that helps any.  Thank you for your help.

If at rest and the rear has only about two inches showing you will be fine. If you have any kind of flex in the front you will need a long slip or a square shaft. It may look fine when flexed out on stands/forklift but in real world wheeling it will come apart.
