Wheels
« on: Jul 07, 2008, 06:27:43 PM »
Alright, I've got 37x13.5R17 Toyo MT's on 17x8 American Racing wheels.  The problem is my wheels have a 4.5" backspace.  This is really bothersome.  They rub the frame really bad in the rear, and they rub my front leaf springs when I turn.  I've already got 1.5" wheel spacers on my front axle, and the wider rear axle.  I need to find new wheels.  I want to stick with 17x8 because I have Staun internal beadlocks for a 17x8, and I think a 17x8 matches the tire super well.  I've looked around and I can't find anybody that makes a 17x8 that isn't 4.5BS.  Any help?

This is all I've found, and they're ugly.

hit up www.summitracing.com and do a search, there are plenty of wheels with less than 4.5" backspace on just summit not to mention the rest of the internet.

I came up with tons of wheels that were less than 4.5 inch backspacing, I even found a few with 2.5 inch backspacing.

Looks like that may be my best bet, I didn't know I could order those Cragar soft 8's with whatever backspacing I wanted.  I'll give them a call tomorrow.  Thanks man.

Yup, I felt obligated to help since I screwed up the first time, haha. If I was going 17x8 (which I might) I would probably end up ordering some black Cragar Soft 8s like you are doing. I think they are a pretty nice looking rim, and they are not terribly expensive either. Let us know what you find out, I am curious as to what you can order. Make sure you ask them at what backspacing the wheels become reversed because reversed wheels will not accept do it yourself style beadlocks last time I looked. Good luck.

Whats the difference between a soft 8 and a regular 15x8, I'm looking at some 15x8 by unique from Americas tire.

different brand? :dunno: Soft 8 is just the style of wheel, i am pretty sure it has something to do with the number of holes in the wheel and the design of the holes.

i ordered some 15x8 us wheel 84 series wheels with custom 1.5" backspacing.... it took alot of nagging to where summit had me call the engineer at us wheel. i spoke to him about how he invented the first smoothie wheel back in the day and how they were the first to powdercoat the white wheels... in their ovens at home. cool guy... anyways i wanted 15x10's with 2" and he said he could do a min of 2.5" on a 10" wheel but he could go 1.5" on an 8" wheel. he said to call summit since they dont sell to individuals. so i called summit and they ordered my wheels got them here in 10 days but they were 15x8 with 2.5" bs.... which was bs! so i had to call summit to find out why and they gave me some bs excuse about my bs. i told them that their bs was bs and i wanted my 1.5" bs wheels and if they tell you they cant get them in that size or tell you its not reccomended tell them its bs and to ship what was ordered damn it! so long story short they will be here thursday and they better be right this time! btw they come bare steel so you have to paint/powdercoat them yourself oh and they were only 186 shipped... twice.... they are supposeed to pick up the old ones but they have yet to contact me and when i contact them they just say that someone will pick them up tommorrow, but nobody comes....

I called and ordered some 17x8's with 3" backspacing today.  He put me on hold for a little bit to check on it, but he got back to me like a minute later and said Cragar would make them and it should be about a week.

Oh cool, that was easy. Let us know about them when you recieve them, I like the 17x8 size (actually I really like 17x9) and I would not mind ordering me up a set of these. Take pics when you get them if you would please, I would like to get a look at them. Thanks.

$186 for all 4 or $42 a piece plus a handling fee. that was to the door since summit has free shipping. a 17" might be a little more expensive though. they may also tell you they cant go with as little of a backspacing on a 17" wheel do to strength issues... tell them to make them or you'll just call somebody else who will...

Yep, the one I opened up looks good.  The boxes say 17x8 3"BS so I'll assume they all match.

Cool. How much did this set you back total? (if you don't mind me asking) I think i will end up with some 17x9 with 2.5 inch backspacing, I am just looking at how much I should look at saving up.
