High Pinion Front diff
« on: Feb 26, 2008, 10:33:36 PM »
Has anyone had any problems running the high pinion front diff? cause ive heard they are weak, but not sure if its true. I plan on running 37s on the new buggy and wonder if the high pinion is too weak.

The low pinion (standard rear and solid axle front) diffs are weak when used in the front when the rig is going forward because the way the gears are cut.  Gears have a drive and coast side.  The drive side is much stronger so it works great in the back.  When you put a low pinion in the front it is on the coast side of the gears which is by many estimates at least 20% weaker as a front vs as a rear.

The high pinion is much stronger when going forward than the low pinion for just the opposite reasons as the low pinion.  The only time a HP is weakish is going backwards which runs the gears on the coast side.

You should be fine.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

Does anyone know when installing a high pinion front end how much you would need to shorten your drive shaft? how much distance do you loose between the tcase flange vs the pinion flange?

YES.... besides the strength of the gears ...your driveshaft is up and out of the rocks...and also your pinion angle is usually 10x better

91-97 Toyota FJ80 Landcruisers are the only trucks they came in.

I shortened mine about 1 inch.
