uuu....   :headscratch:
1. pick up the starter from the Flore...
2. shove that sweat baby into the hole in your bellhousing... t
3. highten the 2 nuts/bolts holding the starter in place...
4. attach all the wires to the right places (might be a good idea to make sure the negative pole is disconnected from the battery...) or you might hit the starter body with the plus terminal making a sweat spark...
5. reconnect the battery.
if you haven't allready removed the old starter that might be your first step.

if my hints helped you at all I would recommend running to next part store and buy some book similar to the Haynes manual. or you might try to google the issue...

Bazzi is correct!

Assuming you have a bad starter in right now, it goes like this:

1. Disconnect the Negative battery wire (VERY IMPORTANT)
2. Locate the starter on the passenger side of the truck attached to the bellhousing of the transmission
3. Disconnect all wires that go to the starter (You did disconnect the neg batt. terminal, didn't you?)
4. Unbolt the bolts that hold the starter to the bellhousing
5. Carefully slide the starter out of the truck however you can, be careful not to drop it on yourself
6. Smile and be proud of yourself

7. Pick up new starter in hand
8. Slide the new starter back to the bellhousing following the same route used to remove the old starter, but in reverse (don't drop this starter on yourself either, it will hurt just as bad as the old one)
9. Bolt the starter back up to the bellhousing using the correct bolts in the correct positions
10. Hook all wiring back up to the new starter
11. make sure all tools are out of the engine bay and not left in there
12. Reconnect the negative battery cable
13. Test to see if it will start your truck
14. If it does, you did dun a good job!
15. If it does not start, either the starter is not the problem, or you did something wrong.

Good luck!

Hate to break it to you, but my name is not richard. You said you wanted help, and I gave you a good break down of how it works. It is not like rocket science.

It would have been even funnier if he would have ask this question on Pirate. At least we gave the answer to his question, he'd still be trying to climb out of the ton of bricks that hit him over there.

From someone who has dropped the starter on themselves, this is funny!

15 is funny too.

If you have not already swapped the starter, it helps to remove the inspection cover in the front passenger wheel well for ease of access to the starter,  fuel filter and clutch slave cylinder. By removing the wheel also helps access.

My 85 has no such panel... my 88 did though, and it did make the process much easier.

If you haven't bought/installed your new starter...don't! Not just yet, as your old starter just needs a set of copper contacts. $30 at the stealer, or @ $5 a pair at your local auto electric shop. The Toyota starter is way better than the aftermarket ones available for $125 at the auto parts store.

Remove the three screws holding the trapezoidal plate, and check out the contacts; one side will be worn way down, and it'll take you all of 10 minutes to replace them (do both sides).  You can sand off where the plunger touches the contacts...good as new. Make sure to use RTV to reseal the plate.

Even if you've used the new one, repair and hang on to the Toyota starter for a spare...you'll need it.

There are some items I never get after-market, and a starter is one of them.  Rebuild it or if it's truly shot(burnt windings or short or whatnot), pony up for the OEM one.  You just don't want your truck not starting at random times, and the OEM one will last at least another 20 years if you rebuild/repair it yourself.

Windshields are another, for instance.  Not worth saving $100 - not with the poor quality that I've seen.

Other things like radiators and so on, the third party ones work as well if not better in some cases.
