power steering box help
« on: May 23, 2008, 12:07:52 PM »
I'm test fitting my power steering box and I keep reading that you should slide it all the way up until it hits the body mount. Mine doesnt go that far up.  Actually when I move it all the way up I'm only about an inch away from one of the existing holes.  Would using one of the existing power steering box mount holes work? I'd love to see some pics.  My truck is an 84.  I was also wondering about tightening the sector nut on the pitman arm, do I just torque it to 90 lbs?
84 longbed, lc eng. top end kit, dual cases w/ 4.7 in rear, arb's front w/high pinion and rear with v6 diff., 5.29's w/ 35s, all-pro long travel 4" and much more

It doesn't need to move much.  If your front springs relocate the front axle 1" forward from the stock location then you only need to move the steering box up 1".  You can move it farther forward by cutting a hole in your core support.   All you need to do is make sure your drag link doesn't hit your tie rod when the springs compress.  My all pro Springs moved the axle 1.5" forward and I never moved my steering box at all.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

Thanks, I think I can get it an inch forward and I just went and took a look at a truck here with the all pro kit and got a better idea of where to put it.  Thanks again.

I did the same thing on my '84 ( http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=30323.120 ). My box is about 3 inches forward from stock and it's real close to the body mount. I did have to modify the core support some and then after lots of fitting I finally got the nerve to weld it in. I'm real happy with the out come. Good luck and enjoy your project.  :beerchug:

That thread is exactly what I was looking for.  Thank you.  I don't have a body lift and I drilled my hole but my box doesnt look like it's aimed up as high as yours because the hole towards the front of the truck is quite higher than the one towards the rear.(bottom two bolt holes). Anyway I hope it works and thanks again.
