Help with wiring!
« on: Apr 16, 2008, 08:14:10 PM »
I have a 85 truck and it had no radio! The question that i have is what color wires are the ground, acc( when you turn the key 1st click), and on( when you start the truck on the 2nd click).
Let me start over. From the deck there is a black, red, and the yellow wire. What wire do i connect these wires to in the dash side of the truck under the ash tray? Thank you and mahalo.

Black = Ground
Red = Battery Positive
Yellow = Ignition

There should be something similar under the dash.  I would suggest to get a test light and start testing the wires to find out which one you need.

The problem that i have is that i don't have a test light and i already know what the wire on the deck is. The problem is that i need to know what factory wires are those three that i have to connect to from the deck.

I beg to differ homefries.... I think it is as follows:
Yellow = battery positive (a permanent positive so the memory works for preset stations and whatnot)
Red = ignition (so the radio will turn on and off with the key)
Black = Ground

But we know busmup808 already knew that....
What I did on mine, however, is simply wire the red and yellow straight to a battery positive lead. this allows me to run the stereo without the key being turned at all (great for camping or crankin' the tunes while you work on the rig :_order:) Also, my elec. fuel pump turns on when the key is turned so being able to run the stereo without the key is great. You just have to remember to turn it off manually EVERY time. I would scrap the stock stereo wires alltogether.....just my  :twocents:

I knew that part but i was trying to stay away  from installing wire from the bay to the cab. As we get older we tend to get lazy. Thats how i feel right now. Thanks people.

if you dont want to run new wires from the bay to the cab, find a pos. lead that is already under the dash and tap into that....the cig. lighter is a hot lead that goes on and off with the key.

Best bet is to get a test light but from what info I have found by researching and taking my radio out is that there should be a yellow wire w/ black strips, this is the ignition + and a white w/ red strips will be your 12v constant.  Hope this helps out a little more.   :beer:
