Hanna Flats
« on: Mar 25, 2008, 10:20:00 PM »
It has been driving me crazy not seeing first-hand the Hanna Flats Campground, the last time I was there I was with the Mammoth's and we stayed there a few days and wheeled the area. I was somewhat surprised that the place wasn't completely gutted, there were picnic tables and even the bathrooms. One was partially burned but looks repairable, about the worst damage besides the trees was the info sign at the entrance. I don't think they will be able to open it  without cutting down a bunch of trees since some look like they may fall. Even if they do it will be pretty much useless for us since there has been a gate installed at the end of the campgrounds. You could travel across to Holcomb Valley but it is a long ways to the trails that are still open.

Also there is now a gate at the entrance to Butler Peak which is also closed.

Actually, your pictures don't look TOO bad.  It will still probably be years before the forest service with open that stuff again.

I'm almost glad that we moved off the mountain, because we used to run from GVL to BB on Holcomb all the time.

It looks like Hanna Flats was on the edge of the fire, once I got to the gate you can see that everything beyond it was toast, nothing left I could imagine what it looked like down by Holcomb Creek bet there's nothing left. It was kinda a last minute deal that I even went or I would have went early and hiked the area, I didn't even have a jacket and there's still quite a bit of snow. I can't remember how many times I've run into people stuck out there at dusk in nothing more that a t-shirt and shorts and thought how dumb they were for not going prepared. I started up one of the cross trails to try and catch where it came across but the mud and snow got a little heavy and I thought better of it. I don't know when but I'm going to go back and hike over to Holcomb creek and Butler Peak.  If you look a picture 22a and 23a you'll see that the hill in the backround is completely leveled and devoid of any tree or vegetation. I cropped a couple pictures to show you where it really cut in at, the 1st one is a little blurry but you can see that there's nothing left on that hillside.

Of all of the trails in the SB Mountains, I liked Holcomb Creek the best. :rivers: Is Deep Creek/Dishpan Springs also closed? :dunno:

I believe that dishpan/deep creek is still open, but I think the tent peg and fishermans campgrounds near the east end of the trail are closed.

Looking at the map, Dishpan is open all the way to 3n16, according to the forest dept. 3n16 is open through the burn area but any other trails through the burn area is closed.

Looking more at the map and Dishpan shows closed. Also a portion of 3n16 on the map shows closed but the info says it's open. :dunno:

Closure map, I don't think they even know since it shows that the trail through Hanna Flats is open.
