I hate carburetors!
« on: Mar 04, 2008, 08:16:10 PM »
Alright another dam carb question, I have an 83 truck that starts up ok when cold, but after a minute or so it idles erratically and and then stalls out after that it will not idle at all, I have checked and rechecked every possible angle a thousand times over, new carb with all new parts, new vacuum lines, base line timing, everything. It ran fine until I put this new carb on , I even tried two other carbs, same thing. I'm ready to shitcan this truck does anybody have any idea what the hell is going on?

When its cold the choke is on...which means its running rich. But when the engin warms up the choke will back off and lean it out. So it dies because it isn't getting enough fuel. Will it run if you give it gas? I would try and richen it up by adjusting the air screw.

Yeah Ive tried the mixture screw abunch of times and it does nothing, its drivable but when I take my foot of the gas itll rev to 2600 and then die out or just die out. It really sounds like a vacuum problem but I checked every vacuum line and connection a dozen times

did you physically check or replace each vacuum line? they are really cheap to do all of them, and over time develop pinholes in them, you cant see these, but enough of them will cause problems

Both stock Toyotas, one was off a friends truck with zero issues and another that was a recent rebuild, this new one is from National Carburetors which is horror story in itself

I will say that most "rebuilt" carbs I have dealt with have been :pokinit: outta the box.  I have dealt with this for years.  BUT, if you have the same issue with a known good stock carb, it sounds like maybe you have misrouted a vac line or possibly you have a bad delay valve that goes to the choke breaker.  double check your vac lines.  again.

I definitely agree with you on the rebuilt carb theory, I was having problems with the choke not operating, I'm still not satisfied its working. My FSM says there is a choke relay in the dashboard somewere, Ive looked for hours and couldn't find it, also with the new carb I had to use temporary solderless connectors since they cut off the plug, could this be a problem?

as long as they aren't corroded/falling off then I would say no.  they aren't great, but they shouldn't cut that much power out.  make sure you aren't losing power to the idle stop solenoid also.  pull the air cleaner off,(just the top is fine you just need to see the carb) and as the truck warms up, the choke will slowly open.  Make sure you have full 12v at the choke, and check to make sure it is adjusted as per the FSM.

Yeah tell me about it its so loud, but i had it idling around 1800 rpms to keep it from dying out and its in the garage so the valve clatter was a little exaggerated. The truck ran fine before the carb replacement except the choke wasn't working

Are you sure the carb is completely sealed around the base, and not sucking excess air once the choke has opened? Spray around the base and vacuum fittings with carb cleaner, when your idle smooths out, you know will know where you are sucking air from, if it is a vacuum leak issue.

Also try this I am carb issues as well. I have 2 black wires coming off my carb, and was having miss issues. i switched the 2 black wires and my miss went away. Now it won't idle below 1800 rpms... but thats another story.
