keep it simple stupid went out the window
« on: Oct 25, 2004, 11:01:41 PM »
I am re-building up a 84 toy that I have owned for 19.5 years.
I am trying to keep it as simple as possible but there is so much I am going to do. standard cab toy with air.
over the years it got built up to 33's, 4:88's, buick 4.1 v6, downey headers, low end torque cam, 390 holley trail prepped carb,
stock G52 transmission and 21 spline transfercase, nerf bars. double over single down roll bar, stock steering, dual batteries,
winch, 2.5 inch body lift, 3 inch downey suspension, doesht tech shocks, 280z bucket seats, an aluminum camper shell,
custom ghetto fabulous epoxy primer paint job, and lots of other little things mostly to do with the stereo,
it is a work truck / play toy so it has to stay streetable and daily driveable. the engine has about 400 miles on it since rebuilt.

here are the plans as they stand and up to the point I am at now.

keeping the engine, air conditioning, body lift, and winch,

I am relocating the winch to a custom front and rear bumper mount, built into the front bumper, allowing it to be
removable and mounted onto the rear bumper if needed.
I like to build things so I will build the bumpers from scratch. to sort of look like stock, yet incorporate
the new front winch mount as close to the radiator as possible, in the grill
it's getting a complete hy steer kit from marlins, fj80 rod ends, power steering conversion,
it will get a new transmission R150f I wanted a r151f but due to lack of availabilty for replacement I chose the r150f.
new advance adapter bell housing, marlin mc07 and crawlbox with 23 spline boxes, v6 adapter plate, short throw shifters,
1.5 inch drive train lift, 63 inch chevy springs in the rear with long shackles, raised rear shock tower, u bolt flip kit front and rear,
boomerang shackles up front with 89 toy rear spring up front with added leafs to adjust the ride height, engine pre oiler kit,
longer front shock towers, cross over strut to support front towers, crossover steering box as far forward as possible, clearancing the
radiator support wall and body mount, re location of the dual optimas to under the bed, in cab roll cage, removal of the sway bars,
may install custom sway away type sway bars with disconnects depends on how it handles on the road with all the new modifications.
fiberglass camper shell, stock front seat cut and shortened to fit between rear fenders with removable mounting points, bed double
walls spaced out to the edge of the rear fenders to allow for extra storage area. cutom roll cage for bed passengers tied to frame rails,
sliders, custom front fender protection tubing to protect the front fenders tied to the sldiers, rock lights, rear fender slider rails, rear bed sliders,
e locker in the front axle Low pinion for now, will swap it for a high pinion later and put this one in the rear, 4:56 gearing since with the V6 the
4:88's were too much on the street, long slip front shaft drive shaft with cv and heavy wall, front stock shaft cut and retubed for the rear,
long feilds, wide axle rear housing, dual gas tanks, new exaust system, new cross member, disk brake conversion, newer style brakes up front,
larger master cylinder, electric fans, on board air, on board welder, custom made wide body cut out front fenders.

here are a list of parts that I have now
bell housing for r150 f swap
23 spline crawl boxes and adapters
4:56 elocker with wiring kit and switches.
4:56 detroit rear
wide axle housing with new axle bearings.
disk brake conversion plates and all necessary parts calipers lines and master cylinder for all brake modifications front and rear,
wheel spacers on the front housing
long feilds, complete hub rebuild kit, wheel bearing and spindle bearings,
hysteer arms and tie rods and all parts up to the box including the frame box.
u bolt flip kits for both ends
shock towers for both ends
35 inch tsl's swampers
short throw shifters for the transmission and transfercases
drive train lift kit from roger brown
cross member from front range off road
chevy mounting plates
long slip drive shaft yoke
extra cv joint for rear shaft
fourrunner rear roll bar
fiber glass shell
new heater core
extra doors
extra fenders

getting the sliders and electric fans this week end

here's what i have already done:
stock front towers removed and new towers welded in
radiator wall clearanced and supported,
front housing prepped and ready for rebuild and install of e-locker and longfeilds
frame fish plated and tubed for box,
steering box mounted
pitman arm mounted
rear tower mounted
dual gas tank mounted between rear frame rails
drive train lift installed,
new crossmember installed
rear disk conversion is mostly complete
63 inch chevies are mounted with double shackles for the moment
wide axle housing installed
detroit rear installed
rear is under truck
stock rear horse collar cross member is cut out and raised up to clear the new driveline parts
part of the wiring is done for the e locker
axles are martacked
the pre oiler kit is installed but not wired
the bell housing transmission crawl boxes are part way installed
the cab mods have been made for the shifters filled the transmission and transfercases with oil
filled the rear housing with oil
the heater core is installed
the interior is gutted for the cage install
the front seat is cut and welded and recovered.
the camper shell is sitting on it
the tires are mounted on the new rims
hammered the fender beads

things still to do:
decide what type of power steering I am going to use with the engine conversion
get the front axle rebuilt with hy steer, elocker, longfeilds, and new bearings and seals installed
get the wiring finished on the pre oiler and the elocker
mount the switch panel in the dash
get the wiring for the battery relocation done.
get the boxes  and skids built for the batteries
get the double wall bed sides spaced out
get the seat installed in bed and mounts fabbed up.
get the shifters installed and the boots completed
get the wiring done on the transmission
get the e brakes figured out
get the rear brake proprtioning valve relocated and tied up
get the dual tanks wiring finished
make the bumpers
winch relocation kit installed
get front shock tower support tube fabbed up and installed
get the front springs mounted measure for the new shocks and weld on mounts
get the rear shackles made
get the rear shock mounts welded to axle housing
get the rear sliders made as well as the fender protection tubes 3/4 .250 wall
get the cage fabbed up and welded in
chop the top off and fabbed for re installation
custom air bag suspension over load brakets fabbed up and welded in
gas tank skid plates fabbed up
get the half doors made and painted.
figure out the demensions for the new drive shafts and have them built
get the new exaust made and installed
get the electric fans installed and wired
get the sliders welded in
make rear antiwrap bar with shackle
cut out the grill for the winch installation
cut out the fenders for clearance
and a bunch of other little stuff I can't even think about at the moment

87 runner, 4" trailmaster lift, 33" TSL/SX, 5.29's V6 e-locker, 22re that cost too much

it isn't a runner it is a standard cab 84 with the front seat cut down to fit between the rear fenders and buckets up front. I just got the runner roll bar in it for the time being and I have been looking for a hood on the cheaps. new job and the wife is stingy now since we used most of our saving when I was unemployed.

here is some of what I have done to it
too much spent to go slow
too much spent to stay low
too much spent on the go

no time no time

my new job has me so busy I can't do anything
and yeah the money is tight now but I have most of the parts on hand

as soon as I can get to it I'll get started again and post up some pics. got to round up a welder again and some torch bottles
so I can do a little more fab work.

the only things left to buy are the drive shafts and the shocks and a few other small odds and ends

I'm still waiting on my sliders to get here and a local shop owner is going to fab the cage when I get it to a point that it can be done easily

getting a full in cab cage and a roll bar and bumpers for 1100 sweet deal for me since I don't have the time any more to do it. or the equipment at the moment.

anyways I'll keep posting up pics as I go.
probably be a slow build considering the time I now have available to me
too much spent to go slow
too much spent to stay low
too much spent on the go
but it's fun you know
