wont idle
« on: Feb 26, 2008, 08:20:36 AM »
new here and i could use some input on this 1980 stock pu, ca smog just started to not want to idle and it feels like it has a miss,so i changed plugs ,wires cap and rotor, witch all looked good, i also checked all the vacume lines, any thoughts ? it dose have a exhaust leek  could that be leaning out a cylinder and making it run like this? :conf:

mine is doing the same thing, I believe it is carburetor related. i haven't had a chance to pull it apart yet. when i do hopefully tommorow I will let you know what I find out. If you solve before let me know what you find out.

It is carb related... Exactly what?  I don't know.  MY CA Smogged '82 does that.  My motor has 15,000 on a rebuild.  I am going to get a weber for mine.

ok this is really going to sound dumb but here goes,i was looking for vacume leaks and every time i sprayed starting fluid at the back of the carb it seamed to smooth out,so i got to looking and saw there was a screw missing from the bottom of the choke thing that the water passes threw then i looked closer and part of it is missing like broke off were the bottom screw would go,but on the carb side not the water side. i know nothing abought carbs but im thinking this is not good and can be a possible leak :(?

I'm not sure on the early carbs. I believe mine has something plugged up inside it. ie not giving enough fuel at idle, and low rpms. I am going to pull the top off it spray all passages , jets, etc out with carb cleaner, adjust my float as long as I am there and hope it idles when I put it all back together.

O.K. So I pulled the top off my carb cleaned out all the passages , jets, all openings, my left eye. Btw carb cleaner burns. Anyways cleaned it all up, put it all back together, started it back up. Still idled like crap. Sprayed around the back with carb cleaned, idle smoothed out. I believe there is a bushing on the main shaft that your throttle cable connects to. I believe that bushing may be worn out causing it to suck excess air, causing a rough  idle. I would pull the air cleaner assembly, start it spray carb cleaner on that shaft where it goes through the carb and see if your idle picks up. I will start a new post to see if this is causing our bad idle.

have you tried to adjust your idle mixture jet yet? they are normally adjusted so lean that any gunk will cause them not to idle.

I've had the jet all the way out and blasted the opening with carb cleaner.

open the carb, empty floatbowl, should be 2 brass jets at the back of the float bowl, remove them one at a time, use your mouth to blow through them both, put back together, tell me if that works, good luck

had the jet out, directly behind the float bowl drain, blew through it and the passage behind it with carb cleaner when i had it apart. Didn't help. Idle on mine smooths out when i spray carb cleaner around the linkage where the shaft goes through to the butterflies. I am guessing something in there is worn out and letting too much air through.

Problem with mine is the bushing is worn on the main shaft. It's letting too much air through, causing the bad  idle..
