gma's car acting up?? Ideas to why???
« on: Mar 05, 2008, 12:35:18 PM »
My grandma's Ford Explorer is back firing or something? getting through 2nd to 4th gears it shakes, and feels like it is choking. I thought maybe a vacuum line, but I really don't know much about vehicles yet.  Can anyone give me an idea on why it's doing this?

MAF or EGR most likely.  If not, then check the coil packs and then the timing.

If it has OBD I on it, slipped timing won't trip the system, nor will a dying maf or egr.   Well, it will, but it will give a code like "do not run" or something equally useless.

It's a Ford!

Seriously, my Ranger did this exact thing it was the MAF. I could hardly get it up to speed and it also was billowing black smoke at times out the tailpipe.
