Redrilling Spring Perches
« on: May 06, 2005, 10:31:20 AM »
I'm going to be putting an 86+ rear axle on my 85 and want to extend the wheelbase a few inches.  I wanted to move the rear axle back an inch or two and have seen the relacation plates that go between the perch and the springs.  I've heard that they are kinda rough on the perches.  I will be making my own u-bolt flip kit so getting the holes on the spring plates shouldn't be tough.

Is moving the axle back an inch even worth the trouble?  I plan on moving the front forward two inches with the rears up front.

When you put the rears up front drill the perches 1 1/2"farther backand it'll move your axle forward a total of 3 1/2"  On th erear just drill the spring perch an inch back and you'll be fine.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Is there any advanage of moving the front forward that extra 1.5 inches?  I won't have to clearance the firewall as much but what about steering.  I still need to mount my IFS box and I've got Marlin's High steer sitting on the bench all ready to go.  Will I run into trouble with the tie rod and drag link hitting each other?  I do like the idea of making the wheelbase as long as I can get it.

You  move your steering box as far forward as possible, even into the radiator support.

How far forward do you have your axle?  Is there such a thing as moving the steering box too far forward?  I'm just asking tons of quesitons because I don't know and have never really done a project like this.

Thanks for all the help and please continue replying and posting pics, they are great!

OK, back from the dead.  I'm now considering redrilling my front perches to make some room for my 40" Iroks.  Does anybody think redrilling spring perches are a big idea?  Does it put too much stress on the front housing, perches, and leaf springs?

I think Marlin has perches with 3 holes in them for that reason.  So I would say do it.. if the steering will clear. I would say 1in back would be safe.
