If your ring and pinion is in good shape, and you don't want to change ratios,

I don't see any reason to change gears if you're installing a locker or limited slip differential.............

Same here, no biggie.  I like to measure my lash prior to disassembly and then duplicate it after the carrier is reinstalled...
'82 pickup, +3, locked, doubled
'82 pickup, IFS long travel, V8
'85 4runner, V8 rock crawler
'88 X-cab, V6
