i dont know if you got your answer or not, but you can bolt the efi manifold onto the older head just fine- -  you dont even need to put the efi exhaust manifold on - - keep your carb exhaust -  but cut and block off your egr ports on the intake- - -  you can eliminate your charcoal can, and every vaccuum hose except your vent and pcv valve on your valve cover - -  just block every vaccum port and dont leave any open

Don't do this if you have to pass emissions.

im actually doing an old 22r to a new 22r swap.... and the fsm will help out a lot, but there are still some major differences in the engine that will need to be addressed, im finding out right now that a lot of the emissions stuff is quite different. yes it might be ok, but you are going to need to pretty much swap over all the related efi equipment, almost would be easier to swap out hte whole engine that try to piece them together... the new 22r to efi wouldnt be so bad, but its the efi to old engine that may give you problems

I put a 22-RE motor out of an 83 Celica GT into my 81 long bed. Everything worx pretty well. I put a tank in from an 86 ext cab. Ran the fuel lines and hooked up a switch to run the fuel pump (didnt feel like tracin the wires for that one) and it runs good now.
1st gen yota truck. 37x12.5x15. 5spd dual cases, chevy springs in rear, toyota rears springs in front. Long bed....the list never ends..
Dont try to shift into 6th when u've only got a 5spd! Rubberside down doesnt always mean rite side up!

Yes, you are right about the emissions they are different and the FSM shows this, and changing everthing over is the best way to go. As far as doing it on an older 22R as long as you have the head that will except the fuelie manifold and you replace the cam ( they are different ) it is pretty straight forward.
