Weber Carb
« on: Aug 13, 2007, 02:29:49 PM »
Looking at getting carb for my '82.  can I tune it to pass emissions (NM)?  I want to upgrade from stock, but need to pass emissions to register the truck.

Thanks, Daniel Z

If you are using this rig a lot offroad, IMO you can't go wrong with the stock carb.

Some offroad and alot on road since my DD was rearended.  My stock carb has serious issues with idle even after a full rebuild.  I am interested in a weber.  Who here runs one? I want to hear some opinions.

Have you drilled out the plug that covers mixture at the base of the carb.  I had to do that to mine to get it to Idle correctly.

No I can look at it though.  The truck stalls alot.  After a run on the highway it will idle for a bit at a time, but eventually starts stalling again. I rebuilt the carb myself 5 years ago, then had a carb shop do it 3 years ago when I rebuilt my motor.  Never has run quite right.

a lot of people run Weber's but it's hard to find one that's CARB approved. and as far as i know there's only a few years that you can use them on. i think the redline weber on line sight would give you some info.. as far as 22r carburetors.. I'd like to know what year carbs work the best for hp and off road. i had an 86 that ran good but the power was real flat.

You were so close to answering your own question.  Another click and you wouldn't have even needed this thread.  This is the same carb but in dgav config, smog legal.  It's what I have and will help you pass emissions, then you jet it to run well afterward.

So, let me see if I get what you are saying.  The link you posted is the carb that I should get?  It is for a 20R, not a 22R.  Will it still work?  I am not real familiar with aftermarket carbs, or what DGEC vs. DGAV means.  :hammerhead: Just need some help!!

the dgec and dgav is how the butterfly's open. don't worry about that get a 32/36 you can find them on eBay for $100 or so and a rebuild kit for $35  adapter for $40 I forgot what jets I'm running but they arnt more than $2 a piece, ball park is the 50 to 60 range for the 32 side and 60 to 75 on the 36 side.
Or the 38 if your running a big cam, header, port work, pistons are bigger.

Is tunung the 38 for emissions easy?  The stupid ass law here is that vehicles from 1975-1985 have to pass emissions every year  :headscratch:.  My '83 Volvo GLTi has to go through the same crap as well.  I just want something simple and functional.
So, is the 32/36 or the 38 better for my application?

The motor is bored 0.030 over, comp cam, LC cam gear, balanced crank, downey header, NWOR 2 1/4" catback w/ magnaflow.

What do you guys think I ought to do?

In that case get the 38 and watch that motor com alive. You will be amazed at how much power the stock carb starves your motor. Cool thing I did to my'n was taking a grinder to the intake and removing the middle section i stuffed rags on both sides of the intake port to keep aluminum out of the intake and cut that peace out. Widened the intake to match the adapter and matched the adapter to the carb. Then vacuumed the intake out and cleaned everthing real good. Depending on what adapter you get, theres some small things to get the linkage to work with the new carb.

I have also played with the jets and this is the best I could get it. You might want to go to 142 fuel jets in a 2.4. I have mine on a 2.2.

sounds good.. i have jets on order, as soon as they come in I'll try dialing it in. what kind of fuel pump are you running??? mines a frame mount electric and it seems to run low on fuel at top speed. I'm thinking on changing the fuel pump.
