noob question about v6 rear axle?
« on: Jun 14, 2007, 04:52:25 PM »
I want to swap to a 86 and newer rear axle. I have the v6 5.29 gears and setup kit but i am having trouble finding a complete v6 axle. I was wondering will a v6 third member drop into a 4 cylinder rear axle? I found someone selling a v6 rear thrid and i was thinking of buying that than getting an 86 and newer 4cyl housing.

Will I need to make modifications to the housing or are the 4cyl and 6cyl the same?

The 86-95 IFS axle housings and axles are all the same, the only difference is the carrier, 4cyl or V6.  The 8" 4x4 truck/4-Runner 3rd members are the same from '80-'95(non Tacoma).

the v6 is stronger, however i have never seen anyone actually break either carrier..... the math does support it though

the 86-95 rear axle tubes and housing are the same for v6 or 22r or res

Not totally true, some minor grinding needs to be done on the gear slots on the flange, especially with 5:29 gears. The slots need to be deepend and widened a bit. No big deal and it makes the 3rd slide in a lot easier.
