triming rear cross member for exhaust
« on: Jul 29, 2007, 12:14:38 AM »
Has anyone trimmed their rear cross member for their exhaust to keep it above the frame? I am redoing my exhaust and would like to try to get it above the frame rails to keep it away from rocks but the rear crossmember is in the way. But I am wondering about the integrity of the crossmember if you cut out a section of it for the exhaust and plate what you have cut. Also this is on a 84 extra cab.

Stock exhaust?

Heat it up and it should bend a little.

unless youve got a flat underbelly i really dont see the need to get it up that high, you will rip your driveshaft apart long befor you hit the exhuast

Yes I have a flat underbelly, just trying to get everything I can tucked up out of the way.

even then, i wouldnt worry about it... you can just make it exit behind the cab, then you wont have to deal with it being out back that far....

i still think you will mangle your driveshaft long befroe you are at risk of mangling the exhuast....

I say cut it & plate it or fab up a new x-member to fit your exhaust. Put some wrap around the exhaust to keep the heat away from the floor so you don't burn anything in the bed  :twocents:
