15/16" socket

use a 6 point socket to avoid rounding as much as possible, a 24mm socket will work as well, but it isn't as good a fit/a little bit sloppier than the 15/16"

also, make sure you get a thin wall socket, the thick impact type sockets may not fit into the round recess around the plug

@ that time, I would also upgrade to the upgraded drain plug style, it's OEM on later Toyota trucks

i got a 24mm and it worked for the front and then i moved to the back, drained it and then realized that the previous when redneck vice grip on the fill plug, so the socket is useless...

were you able to remove it? if not, try a chisel and a hammer, i have always had luck using an air chisel

everytime i have tried that, it never works, i jsut end up snapping the nut off.....

air tools have been the only way that have ever worked for me... you could also jsut try a manual chisel and a hammer, will take longer but should get teh job done

I hate the factory plugs on the diffs and bottom of the tranny and t-case.  Way too thin and easy to strip.  The replacements Marlin sell are 100X's better than the stock ones.

I agree. well 1 bfh and 1 huge vice grip tightened with a allen wrench and a few busted knuckles and its off. It was really on there. replaced it with a magnetic drain plug instead of a fill plug, got it at the yota man for 50 cents...

#90341-18021 drain/fill plugs

#12157-10010 aluminum crush washers

there are steel washers available and im looking for the part # right now, i have used the aluminum everywhere and never had a problem with leakage though

Aluminum washers are designed for transfer cases, and aluminum transmissions (G, W & R series). Steel washer is designed for axle housings and steel transmissions (L series).

marlin sells these for $4 per washer with plug, and that isnt a bad price, it is about what the dealer charges for the item (not sure if marlins are steel or alloy washers though)

however i order them in bulk from an online toyota places like www.trdparts4u.com or www.1sttoyotaparts.com or www.toyotaoffroadparts.com and it is a lot cheaper
