85 22re efi automatic problem..Marlin?
« on: Apr 05, 2004, 03:47:29 PM »
It is an 85 standard cab automatic with 5.29's welded rear lock rite front bla bla bla. Anyway,  In 4lo with hubs locked and unlocked,  if I hit the gas, at first it wil pop 3 or 4 times, and when it shifts to second, same thing. Not a U joint.  I did about a 45 degree short hill climb in low gear and it would climbed fine, but pop.......pop.......pop.......at a regular interval as I climbed.  The sound I am sure is coming from the t-case or tranny.  Chain maybe, unsure. I was thinking maybe lock rite, but I had a friend listen from the outside just to make sure that it wasn't in the axle, he could hear it coming from the tcase/ tranny too. It doesn't do it in 4hi or 2hi, just 4lo..And seemingly under load.  Does anyone have any idea what it might be......

Thanks,  Troy

"It doesn't do it in 4hi or 2hi, just 4lo"

:disturbed: You've damaged something in the reduction box.(the front section of the t-case) :disturbed:

Begin by draining the t-case oil and look for aluminum debri. It sounds like your drive chain may be streched and possibly jumping teeth. The chain may also be hitting the case?
It is common to only have this problem in low range because of the torque.

Also using a block of wood, carefully jack up on the oil pan untill the body begins to moves and then check both front motor mount---could be bad also.
