Exhaust manifold question
« on: May 20, 2007, 12:52:01 PM »
What is the tube that goes on top of my exhaust manifold.  i have an 84 4runner with the 22r.  Here are some pic's
is a pic of the tube:

Here is a pic of the manifold:

Every one of the 4 bolts that hold the strap down broke when i was removing them.  What can i do about this?  Can i just plug the exhause manifold, and the tube?

Thanks for the help,

Jay

DO you have to get the truck smogged?
The tube is part of the exhaust recirculation system.
If you don't, I would grab a set of headers...they will block off the holes in the head, then grab a set of block off plated for the EGR system from LCEngineering and get rid of all of it.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Can i just plug the holes in the exhaust manifold, and leave the tube like it is?  What will that do?

did you use PB blaster on those at all or did you just torque them off? And yes what CTENG said is what i would do, Downy makes a great Tri-y for those 22r's that come with the block off stuff.

well sure you could block off the holes, which the new mani would do, but leaving the recirc tube open is not a great idea. It will push cold unfiltered air back through the intake. At the least get the block off kit from LC.

the EGR part of your emissions system. It recirculates exhaust gas coming out of the engine to burn off any unused fuel before they exit the exhaust.

So, for a quick fix, i can tap the holes ontop of the manifold.  Could i just cut that tube, and put a cap on it, so no air goes thru it.  Will that mess with how my motor runs?

I dont have to worry about emissions, but i dont want the motor running like crap!

Thats what i will do.  I just wanted to make sure that if i block off everything, it wont affect how it runs.

That is way to much effort.  I just need the manifold to work for a bit.  Untill i get a header!  I tapped the holes in the manifold and cap'ed the tube, and it worked great.
