Frame Repair?
« on: Feb 27, 2007, 08:15:41 PM »
I need to repair the frame on my Yota.

Driver's side:

Passenger side:

Now I'm not 100% sure how to go about this. I don't need any of the mounts that are there on the frame as I've got a flat bed on the truck and those mounts are for the factory bed.
From talking to friends who have done this before, I'd have to cut out the rusted frame and weld new tube of the same size in.
Is this all there is to it?

I was thinking of welding the new section in and then bracing it to the frame to make it stronger.
Any and all help is welcome!
Anthony

What I think I'm gonna do it get rid of all the rust. Put a patch panel inside and weld it then plate over the patched areas. Should make it nice and strong.

Stock frame is 1/8" thick from what I was told so I'm thinking I'll use the same thickness.

You can, you just need to be really careful when doing it.
For this though, I don't thinking going thicker will really help.

ya, you CAN, but weldin thicker metal to a thinner base metal makes it more difficult to determine how much heat is going into the thinner base metal, there fore its easier to blow through....n once that happens, you'll put a ton of heat into the thin metal...its just a mess...so dont be dumb, do it right the first time, cuz if ya screw it up n have to grind it off, then the metal is weakened and its now worthless to weld to it and expect it not to break...  learned that in metallury...

I am not sure but the pics show a pretty bleak frame,  maybe you should concider building a tube frame using round tubing, or possably try something like willymammoth did.  It turned out sweet and probably wasnt too expensive to build. If you use your old frame as a jig it probably wouldnt be real difficult to put together.  But if your gonna patch it it wouldnt be a bad idea to use simular metal  and possably patch it from both sides or patch one side and box in the other.  Anyways Im pretty tired so i may be speaking giberish or spanish or something so i will just shut up.   :hammer:
Life is too short!!!   Do something with it!!!

This is what i do for a living...repair other people's Toyota 4x4's. The frame is box construction, half full of wet mud. It rusts from the inside-out, the outside looks great right up to the end, so if it looks that bad forget it. Here are some pics of my work...

The inside of the frame is 2-1/8" wide by 4-3/4" tall, so 2x4 box slides right in, with a little filling to do on the top. It usually doesn't rust out from the torsion-bar mounts forward, and that's a good thing, cause from there forward it gets complicated. Don't worry about the fancy curves, just cut out a wedge and weld to form the new frame. Feel free to ask questions, or have me do it for you for $800. But i'm located in Pekin, Illinois 61554, so that might not work.

I'm closer to the east coast of Canada.

I plan to patch it inside and then plate the out side. These are the only bad spots in my frame. Everything else is perfect.

I thought about replacing the rear part like Oddmar did. However, I don't have a garage at home so that's a major issue.

I would like to build a complete new frame for the truck. However it's a few years off still.

I'm in Mississauga.

I'm gonna start repairing the frame this weekend. For now a total frame swap is out of the question.
