4.3 w/hy-steer
« on: Feb 26, 2005, 10:05:06 PM »
I have a 85 4 runner with apx 3-4 in lift and want to install the chevy v6 but will the oil pan clear the the hy-steer under compression (I would est about 4 inch compression)?  Anyone running a similar set up?

I have a 4.3 with crossover steering.  Hy-steer may interfere with the front of the oil pan or harmonic balancer depending on your install.  My drag link just touches my exhaust, it comes around under the front and y's near the oil filter.  I currently run a W56 trans and passenger side exhaust needs to run around the front for clearance.  It will not fit past clutch parts on pass side.

Do you have a body lift?  It sounds like I may need to have one to make it work.  :dunno:

Body lift has no effect on the crossover, it's all frame down.  Exhaust issues are a combination of trans choice and manifold options.

My steering set up is a little unconventional compared to most, but if I had run standard hysteer it doesn't look like there would be any problems. My oil pan sump is in the rear, so there was no interferance there. If it were close, it should only be a problem under equal compression. Like jumping. Under normal rock crawling where you're articulating, one side goes up, and the other goes down, so there shouldn't be clearance problems under those conditons. Good bump stops should limit the equal compression and prevent contact.
Usually a small body lift is required to clear the top of the motor. If you don't like body lifts, and don't mind a little body work there are some hood scoop options to gain the clearance.
As far as exhaust goes, there are other routing options. I run my cross over under the tranny just behind the bell housing. It's tucked up out of the way, and doesn't interfer with any other parts.

I had hy-steer on mine for about 6 months (no wheeling trips) and had to pull it in part because the tie rod hit the front of the oil pan.

That said, each swap is different.  My engine was mounted low and back on custom mounts.  I could have likely lifted it an inch or two to prevent the problems, but it was easier to simply change to standard crossover.

I just figured if I had to a body lift would allow me to set the motor higher.

Down fall of that is you're raising your center of gravity. If your going to raise your center of gravity, you might as well gain clearance to everything, not just your body.

Good point..I think like the hood scoop idea the best, although I did find some info on some caddy intake/air cleaner setup I'm going to check out.
