Intermittant grinding from calipers???
« on: Nov 11, 2006, 12:50:44 AM »
I have an 89 reg cab pickup that is pretty much stock. Several months ago I replaced the front wheel bearings and brake discs with Toyota parts. I also replaced the original calipers with the Marlin units.  I noticed a light grinding feel when braking lightly at low speeds that would happen every once in a while. I replaced the pads from the Marlin calipers with Toyota units and a Toyota shim kit. They never squeek now, but that same grinding is there. I can't find anything else up front that could be causing this.

Anyone have experience with this?

Thank you!

It very well could be just the material from the type of pads being used.

I thought about that also, but the rotors and pads are OEM Toyotas. My thinking was that they shouldn't make noise since they are designed to work together per Toyota.

I was thinking I could try sanding the rotor surfaces and see if that does any good. Anyone know what grit is appropriate for that??

Thanks

Are you sure you getting the grind from the front and not the rear? I'd go ahead and scuff the rotors and pads (anywhere it's glazed) with some fine emery cloth. The OEM parts are great, but you could also try a set of ceramic pads.

Loose wheel bearings can cause intermittent "grinding" noise.  Jack up truck and verify tight wheel bearings.
