there is a clip on the stub shaft in side the third member, and it sounds like u either broke the stub shaft, or lost the c clip, check if the shaft is sheared off, and pull the front diff cover and look if the c clip is still there, and if the spider gears are still in one piece

you can also unbolt the 6 bolts holding the axle onto that flangwe, and then pry that flange out with a screwdriver.  You may have issues inside the diff though, so you should prolly upen it up.  Just missing a c-clip wouldn't cause it to make a lot of noise.  You might have sheared the stub shaft, but you should be able to move the whole axle if that were the case.  :dunno:

Pull that aluminum cover and see if all the teeth are there.

I do have one (good one laying around with 4.11S in it) if it comes to it.
Let us know how you make out with it.

I think that flange is actually the end of the axle shaft, connected to the ring gears via snap ring. pull the diff cover inspect the snap ring.

No, no bolt inside that flange.  Just a snap ring inside the diff.

It can be smacked out with a hammer provided you rotatae the shaft with each smack.
