Heavy Gear oil fumes in cab
« on: Jan 26, 2004, 11:32:31 PM »
I recently had a dual t-case w/ 4.7 gears installed in my truck(89 x-cab v6) along with a short throw tranny kit and a new clutch and all I can smell in the cab is gear oil.  :maddest: I checked the shift boots and they appear to be good. Has anyone else had this problem?

In summer heat, and heavy service situtations, I have received some complaints. However, once the truck is up to speed, and the trans-Marlin box-rear t/case cools down, the smell will go away.
Cheap gear oil, torn shifter boots, leaking valve covers, new exhaust stystem, ect., are possible other causes. :psss:

I had a similar problem-due to my own stupidity, when I cut the hole for my second case, I didn't account for the added torque movement and the edge of the cut ended up cutting the crap out of the shift boot- a little more filing/bending and a new shift boot have made life much better except for the residual gear oil on the carpet that was getting wet. ew. :driving:

I've got to check that but it is definitely a possibility. What's the best way to route the exhaust in this case?

are you driving or setting in trafic?
Do you have body lift . How much. You need three inches You can run it to the out side of the frame, between the cab and frame.
The other way is make a heat shild, there are millions of diff heat shilds

Hey Stone 4x4, I've got about 5 inches of suspension lift and no body lift. The oil fumes tend to come and go either when I 'm in traffic, on the freeway at speed or on the trail. You may be right in the sense that the exhaust is heating up the t-case and the only place where the t-case can breathe is through the shift boot and hence into the cab. I'll look into fabricating some sort of heat shield. Have you had a similar probllem?
