Shifter boot replacement
« on: Jan 30, 2004, 12:38:29 PM »
I have an '84 4runner (carbed 22R, G52, marlin gearset in TC).

A couple of years ago, I installed a twin-stick for the TC.
Works well.

However, the boot that came with it didn't fit, so I had to tear the
factory 2-hole rubber boot to get it to work.  Now there is a lot of
noise coming thru (this is also a DD, and sees a lot of hwy miles
for SoCal trips from Sacramento area).

Is there a replacement rubber boot that will fit my rig ?
Same question for the dressy non-rubber boot that fits over
the rubber boot ?

TIA
Rick

here's what I did:
I'd take a picture but it has the console over it.
Find another stock boot that will fit your main shifter and front t-case handle. Go to an autoparts store and buy one of those mr. gasket universal shift boot covers (10 bucks, or there abouts) and put that one on the second shifter. Use some spare sheet metal and cut out a pretty looking rectangular piece and screw it down in the hole that is in between them-that's what I did and it made a HUGE difference in :driving: pleasure as well as a significant reduction in this feeling  :flamer:, which is good.

Thanks again, gferris :beerchug:

We sell a two hole boot with our twin stick kit that would seal your twin stick shifter. I think we sell it for $20-25.00.
You will need to cut your factory boot in two, and keep the trans boot in the factory location.
I belive a peice of sheet metal could be used to mount the twin stick boot in place.
I have not had the opportunity to install a twin stick in the factory location.

Marlin-have you ever considered marketing a trick, "Dual t-case console" maybe with cupholders  and/or other cool stuff? that would provide a place in the runners to put the rear window switches and stuff on? (mine just kind of float around) most of the ones I've seen have been hacked to fit the second lever, it seems like it might be worth the money for people just to buy a nice lookin one...

Years ago I did look into making a custom console, but a mold was required for starters......$$$$$....$$$$
Instead, I rotate the switches 180 degrees, carefully cut new holes and relocate the switches 2" forward on the orginal tran/t-case plastic housing. After cutting the floor of the factory center console, I install a short throw and it works just great.

What about making a shifter for the rear case that is bent just right to come up through the little square pocket in the console on the 4runners?
