auto trans problems please help!!!!
« on: Jul 23, 2006, 02:34:17 PM »
I have an 85 with an automatic trans, for some reason it shifts into over drive at 40 mph, for some reason my over drive button doens't work, it likes skips third gear and drops into overdrive.  It wasn't to noticible with my stock 225's but it is now with 33's its real noticeable.I cant get any speed unless I hold out 2nd gear to about 5,000 rpm, or unless I'm barely on the throttle, which take about a 3/4 of a mile to get up to 55 that way. I took it to a trannsmission shop and they said the trannys fine and recommended me to an electric shop, but the electric shop said they couldn't read my computer or something stupid.  I wanted to see if anyone has any ideas before I end up taking it to the toyota dealership and getting gripped off.

                             Thanks, Justin

Ive got a 87 auto and my OD does this same crap..on 32's totally skips 3rd and drops straight into OD at like 35-40mph. But my OD toggle button works :driving: I keep OD off 24/7. How bout your dash light for OD off.. does it do anything when u toggle the shifter switch? Your only solution is to fix that... or get some 5.29gears of course  :beerchug:

un hook the transmissions throttle cable from the thorttl linkage at the upper plenum. make sure the cable moves freely in and out of the cable housing, and see if you feel the return spring inside of the transmission while pulling on the cable. if it returns it is fine. reinstall the cable. and tighten it up a little more than it was before to give it a later shift. if that doesn't change anything it is internal.  I am going to be pulling a trans out of a 87 runner this week, if you are local and need one that works, I am sure I could hook you up for pretty cheap. I usually get 250 credit from the guy I give them too.
