Marlin Crawler Shift Question
« on: May 17, 2006, 10:48:47 AM »
I bought a rig with the marlin dual crawler setup installed and am confused on one issue. Should I be able to have the front case in low with the rear case in 4H and 2H? The rear will pop out of gear if I shift it into high while the front is in low. Is that correct? If not what could cause the problem. Thanks

Yes... You should be able to have the front case in low with the rear case in 2h or 4h. Sounds like you have the sameproblem I do with mine. I didnt know what year my rear case came out of and I guess itwas from an 87-88 W-56 and they have a 1/2" piece that needs to be cut off the shift rod and if you dont, with the rear in 2h or 4h and the front in low, it pops out and you have to mess with it and take the shifter off and re-align the shift rods. I need to take mine out and cut that little piece off and it sounds like you need to do that too.

From the marlin crawler main webpage in the tech section. But if it was from behind an 85-88 not 87-88 W56... I was off. Here is what it says:

Preparation of Rear Transfercase
This article is specifically about assembling the crawler. If you got this far putting the back end on should be painfully easy. But, just for giggles, here's the other stuff you will need to do before you can wheel.

If your rear-most case is out of a 1985 to 1988 top shifting EFI (W56) tranny then you must shorten the driver's side shift rod. This is the shift rod sticking out of the rear most case when you shift into 4hi that has the flat side on top. You must trim 1/2" off of the shift rod to avoid jamming between the two cases. See marlin's instructions that came with the adapter.

Thanks man you rock . It does ocassionally get stuck in N so that must be the problem. Damn I'll have to pull the case apart. I just bought this buggy and haven't wheeled it yet. I'll have to see how annoying it is on the trails before taking the time to pull it apart

I'd just go ahead and do it now if I were you :dunno:  It's reall not that hard, and you may be saving yourself some headache on the trail later

I've got a small local ride this weekend. It won't get taken care of by then. It will be fixed soon though. For this one I'll just keep the rechet in the buggy to fix the shifter. I'm a recovering jeep guy and these yota parts confuse me :shhh:
