Hot Runner
« on: Apr 11, 2006, 08:20:51 PM »
My son has a 85Runner & on the last run started overheating. Took out thermostat, didn't help.
Any choices besides, head gasket .... water pump ....... or fan clutch
If its the fan clutch, can it be repaired ?

if it is the fan clutch, you just replace it :smack: Check under the oil cap for a milkshake, check to see if you are losing coolant(not leaking).

to check the fan clutch, spin it by hand, it should NOT go 1 full turn.  If you're not sure after that, get the thing up to temp, (use a rag and be VERY careful here) try to stop the fan.  If it stops, it's junk.  If it chews on your fingers, its ok.

I was told the dealer sold the silicone gel & it could be repaired (I thought it sounded stupid)

Also check for cool spots on the radiator. It's old enough that your radiator could be gettin plugged up.

Or just try and catch it with the rag. Don't put your fingers directly in the spinning blade, come from up top.

I wouldn't attempt that, if the thing spins.. it spins..  While you are driving the fan is not really doing anything anyway.

If you really want to test the thing take it off and test it right, check your manual - I believe you can "water" test them but don't hold me to it.

How long ago did you put the new rad in? I it possible that the system became air locked during the instillation.

you guys can say what you want.  Like I stated earlier, if you are dumb enough to get hurt by doing that, go to a mechanic.  I am done here.

seems to me, my sons Runner isn't the only thing with overheating problems
Looks like a new fan clutch did the trick for him
