Scuba - Powertank?
« on: Mar 31, 2006, 08:52:54 AM »
I have a scuba tank that I use for paintball, and I was wondering if anyone knows if you can convert it into a system similar to the powertanks?

I can be done, a friend had one mounted to the frame of his 4Runner. Don't know how he did it but at least you know it has been done now.

Seems like if you had the part that clamps onto the valve you should be able to pull the hose off and adapt a regulator to it. If you are using it for paintball you may already have this setup. Just make sure you're regulator is set low enough for running air tools and such safetly. (no more than 120psi or so)
I would mount the regulator as close to the bottle as possible. If you had the bottle on and you blew a hose between the tank and regulator you'd be spitin 3000psi. That could do some damage to the ole melon.

Years ago my buddy had one that he bought at the richard Cepek store before they went under, it was in a kit form, I even called him but he could barely remember having it.  He did say it failed after a few seasons but would be easy to reproduce just make sure you paint it or get rid of anything identifying it as a scuba tank because he got read the riot act by a park ranger for "unintended " use apparently there is a law about reusing scuba tanks after they expire.

i use a 4500psi firefighter's scba with a regulator from a co2 bar setup. it works excellent with breathing air. i can fill it up anytime i am at work.  co2 has a higher expansion rate so actual volume becomes an issue. I carry 3 tanks for spares if i have to fill 35's.  For me, it was a hell of a lot cheaper tha buying a powertank.  Free tanks + $10 regulator(ebay)= cheap

I've used one for years, just pick up a regulator on ebay with a pressure gauge and low pressure inflator hose. You can get tire chucks at a dive shop to fit the quick connector on the hose. With an 80 cubic foot tank you can fill 3 sets of 35's from 12-15 psi up to 30psi. Plus fills are cheap.

I talked to the guy at the scuba shop and he said for about $100 I can convert it over. 50-75 of that was for a used regulator, and that will keep the pressure around 120-140 psi. Also, the just put a sticker on the outside that says its not for scuba. Then besides the yearly visual, there is a 5 year pressure test. THat way they will refill the tank with no questions for about $5.00 per fill.. and thats a 80 cf. Sounds like a good deal.

You would use the air tank to air back up after wheelin' with confidence at 4 or 5 psi all day long...

No seeds of doubt here, only seeds of wisdom...  tatumson.
