On the Cheap= 5.29s or 4.56s w/dual trans??
« on: Feb 03, 2006, 08:48:28 AM »
I have a 86 that I am wanting to run some 36x12.50s(or wide 35"s) I am kinda buiding on the cheap as I get some cash. I am wanting to change the gear ratio to turn the tires, and run a locker on the rear. I have a open V6 4.56 to put in the front(while I build my 84 axle) and a V6 3rd (4.10) that I could rebuild with bearings/seals and a locker. I also have 3 4cyl 8" 4.10s, that I could put 5.29s in. But I cant do both (5.29s/dual cases) right now. So its either 5.29s,locker- or- 4.56s,locker,dual trans?

I might drive this truck on the road 15-20 miles 15 days a month at the most. Its a weekend wheeler. I mostly play in the mud and climb hills, not much at rocks right now. But will the 36"s/4.56s eat my clutch drivin on the highway?

The only time you will be wearing it down should be on start off's from full stop. I have a buddy who runs 36's and 4.10's as a partially DD and he doesn't eat his clutch, just really slow at starting off the line.

Most people, at some point, want to go to bigger tires.  So if you even THINK you might want to go bigger some day, then I would get 5.29s and the locker now.  Duals are great, but if you aren't crawling much, you can wait for those.

I think you'll be happy with the 5.29s and 36" tires. :twocents:
